Tighter Lower Bounds on Mutual Information for Fiber-Optic Channels

چکیده
In fiber-optic communications, evaluation of mutual information (MI) is still an open issue due to the unavailability of an exact and mathematically tractable channel model. Traditionally, lower bounds on MI are computed by approximating the (original) channel with an auxiliary forward channel. In this paper, lower bounds are computed using an auxiliary backward channel, which has not been previously considered in the context of fiber-optic communications. Distributions obtained through two variations of the stochastic digital backpropagation (SDBP) algorithm are used as auxiliary backward channels and these bounds are compared with bounds obtained through the conventional digital backpropagation (DBP). Through simulations, higher information rates were achieved with SDBP compared with DBP, which implies that tighter lower bound on MI can be achieved through SDBP.

On Achievable Rates for Long-Haul Fiber-Optic Communications
Lower bounds on mutual information (MI) of long-haul optical fiber systems for hard-decision and soft-decision decoding are studied. Ready-to-use expressions to calculate the MI are presented. Extensive numerical simulations are used to quantify how changes in the optical transmitter, receiver, and channel affect the achievable transmission rates of the system. Special emphasis is put to the us...
متن کاملAchievable Rates of Multidimensional Rotationally Invariant Distributions
The maximum achievable rate or mutual information of multidimensional rotationally invariant distributions in the presence of additive white Gaussian noise is analyzed. A simple expression for the special case of multisphere distributions is derived. Such distributions consist of points in a multidimensional Euclidean space that are uniformly distributed over several multidimensional concentric...
متن کاملMutual Information and Conditional Mean Prediction Error
Mutual information is fundamentally important for measuring statistical dependence between variables and for quantifying information transfer by signaling and communication mechanisms. It can, however, be challenging to evaluate for physical models of such mechanisms and to estimate reliably from data. Furthermore, its relationship to better known statistical procedures is still poorly understo...
متن کاملTwo-way Channel In Information Theory
Firstly, an introduction of two-way communications channel is given. Then Shannon’s inner and outer bounds are introduced. Upon Shannon’s bounds, tighter lower and upper bounds are found for general discrete memoryless two-way channels. After that, the capacity regions of some specific two-way channels are discussed. Finally, a summary is given.
متن کاملQuantum measurements and entropic bounds on information transmission
While a positive operator valued measure gives the probabilities in a quantum measurement, an instrument gives both the probabilities and the a posteriori states. By interpreting the instrument as a quantum channel and by using the monotonicity theorem for relative entropies many bounds on the classical information extracted in a quantum measurement are obtained in a unified manner. In particul...
